Early Stone Age dwellings

The first people settled down in Finnmark more than 10 000 years ago, shortly after the ice had retreated from the coast.

These people lived in tents of hide and moved to new settlements several times during a year, but more resent finds suggest that they might also have had more permanent turf huts at this time.

At Mortensnes the settlements from this first period are identified by flakeschips of stone and stone pieces that are leftovers from tool production and tools and lacks visible structures such as house grounds or fireplaces.
