Joik is a Sami song tradition and is claimed to be the oldest traditional form of music in Europe. Joik has several different functions.

Narrative joiks is used to tell stories, while personalised joiks are related to a place, animal or person. In pre-Christian times joik was in addition also used by the noaidis (a person with a special connection to gods and spirits, and who is often described as the Sami shaman) to go into a trance.
