Guovžageađge/Bear Stone

At the top of Čiesti/Fuglåsen at Ceavccageađge/Mortensnes lies a large rock that from a distance looks like a bear. It is called Guovžageađge/Bear Stone. The bear, guovža, had a special position in pre-Christian Sami culture. The bear was considered to be an animal with special abilities and great power, and it was therefore important to be on good terms with it. The bear could for instance be honoured by cooking the meat according to certain rituals, and after the meal was over the bones were collected and buried similar to a human..
